Twenty-six candles at Christmas 

It was coming towards Christmas, children in a school 

They went, with songs and joy, 

They were young, straight of limb,

True of eye and steady and aglow, 

Eager to learn and grow.

Their teachers were staunch to the end against odds unforeseen

They fell with their faces to the foe, protecting their care.

They will not grow old as we, who are left grow old,

Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn 

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them
